John is the Official Analyst to the States of Jersey. Under the Official Analyst’s (Jersey) Law 2022 he is responsible for using chemical and microbiological analysis to advise on and investigate matters where it is in the public interest, including law and order, public health and safety, environmental protection, consumer interests government policies and functions. John holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Chemistry (Honours), Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Toxicology and Analytical Chemistry, and Bachelor of Laws (Honours). He is also a barrister (non-practicing) and has passed the Jersey Advocacy Exams for qualification as an Advocate of the Jersey Royal Court. John holds several ex-officio positions including the Jersey Advisory Council for the Misuse of Drugs and the Jersey Medicines Advisory Council. He advises in areas of the islands scientific policy and is an expert witness to the Jersey Royal Court. His work as a forensic toxicologist has been primarily to optimise the laboratory to cope with a large variety of analyses for a small number or even one-off of samples. John has been part of UKIAFT from its inception when it was known originally as UKFT Forum and then UKFT Network. He has hosted several meetings in Jersey including the AGM in 2022.
