Hazel Torrance works at the Scottish Police Authority, Forensic Services (SPA FS) as Head of the Forensic Toxicology Service, having moved the Post Mortem Toxicology Service from the University of Glasgow in December 2022. She has been responsible for the provision of Post Mortem Toxicology to 80% of Scotland since 2008.
Prior to this Hazel completed her PhD in Forensic Toxicology at the Forensic Medicine and Science Department at the University of Glasgow in 2005. Her PhD specialised in the use of Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry in Forensic Toxicology, and included projects related to validation of the Field Impairment Test at the roadside, a European prevalence study of drugs in drivers and assessing the use of different oral fluid devices for monitoring drug addicts in recovery.
Current interests include active involvement with Public Health initiatives, working with other professionals to best inform public policy. In addition, working with other parts of Forensic Services to facilitate the earliest detection of new drugs contributing to deaths and harms across Scotland.
Hazel has been involved in UKIAFT since its beginnings, including when it was the Forensic Toxicology Network (FTNET). She performed the role of Secretary on the UKIAFT Council 2022 to 2025
